I was told to fill in your choice with a X or a ✔.
An X is usually the way they tell you, but so long as you select only ONE option, and mark it clearly, you should be fine. I’ve worked an election before where someone marked their choice with a happy face and we counted it. But if that person had marked their choice with a happy face and all the other options with a pukey face, then it would have been more complicated and more likely to be counted as a spoiled ballot.
I just worked the Advanced Polls for my riding and we were taught that an X is to be prefered, but honestly, as long as it’s clear which candidate you are voting for, you can do whatever you want inside the circle. Please try to avoid writing on the rest of the ballot though, as that causes confusion and ‘spoils’ your ballot. It will then be put in an envelope with other spoiled ballots, and after that, it will need a judge to review it to make a determination about its validity.
Okay I wasn't going to make up a post about this election cycle but I saw a post last night that I could not believe. Now granted it had zero notes before myself and op exchanged some words but I guarantee more people are misguided in some silly way about how things work. The post that sparked mine here said something to the effect of every vote not for the Liberal party is essentially a vote for the Conservatives. Now. Going to tell you why this ideology is a crock.
First off, unlike the US there is more than 2 substantial parties to consider. In canada, we have the Liberals, which many people like to liken to the Democrats in the US. They have piggybacked off of many of the ideas the NDP have pitched already including taking the NDPs promise of a $15 minimum wage and pitching it as their own in the latest reviews of platforms. They want to give more grants for schooling but not make it free for all. They also have very small tax plans(3%) for tech giants like Facebook, Google, and the like on what they make from advertisements and the selling of our personal data.
Next we have the Conservatives, which are likened to the Republicans in the states. The conservatives have taken many of the appealing ideas from other campaigns and promised the same or better but with no actual plan on where they intend to get the funds to do them.
Then we have the New Democrats. If I were to make a comparison to the US politics, I'd probably liken them to Bernie Sanders in particular. They want free post secondary and pharmacare for all. A unique proposal from what I have seen this cycle. They also would like to invest in local infrastructure to incentivize people into getting more green options readily available in their every day lives and wish to abolish paid public transit in the next 10 years. They also want to reinstate the bus service to rural communities that ended with Greyhound shutting down.
The we have the people's party which is basically more conservatives. They aren't as problematic this election cycle though as at most all they will accomplish is splitting the conservative votes in some more conservative swinging ridings.
Then we have the green party. To be honest, their platform is decent but many Canadians do not know they have a representative to vote for in their riding so there isn't much chance for them many areas. They unfortunately just do not have the presence they need.
We also have the Bloc Quebecios. I have no idea if that's spelled right as I can't spell in French plz don't crucify me over it. They usually only ever get votes in Quebec due to usually only having reps over there.
Apparently there is also a party known as the co-operative Commonwealth which has no leader and had just one seat last cycle. I feel the need to mention them as they are there but I have not seen any platform from them and they have no leader so there will likely be no further mention of them in this post.
If you want to read more in depth on their up to date campaign promises you can do so here.
So now that we know of the 6 active parties in Canada and the co-operative Commonwealth, let's get into things, shall we? Let's start with how our election works. Many people are aware of first past the post. Whatt that means in case you aren't aware is that in order to win, a party needs 50% of the votes plus just one single additional vote. This is where the whole every vote matters comes into place as during a very close election, your vote could be the deciding factor. It is a little more complex than that though as our government is also decided based on seats held by the parties. 50+1 only applies to the elections in each riding. This is a point I firmly believe there is confusion on. Let's give you an example. Some background information: in my riding, Saskatoon Grasswoods, I only have five representatives to choose from. One for each of the main 6 minus the Bloc. Now, according to many polls, right now the conservatives are polling as most popular with potentially 60% of the vote. Most of the election polls are not super accurate nor do they mean anything as last election the results were wildly different than the polls would suggest, consider this your disclaimer. Let's ignore the polls for now and say we had 50% conservative votes but we were nearing the end of the count and had like 6 ballots left to tally. All the conservative rep for my riding needs is one more vote and he becomes our MP again. This has no bearing on whether or not the conservatives win the federal election at this point. All this means is our conservative MP gets re-elected and gets to go back to Parliament to be our voice in the votes on bills Parliament puts through.
In order for a party to win the election, they must get the most seats. First past the post doesn't apply to the seat situation as we have things like minority governments and so on and so forth. There are 338 ridings in Canada. This means there are 338 seats to be filled in parliament and 338 votes to be considered when bills go to vote for laws and such. If a party manages to win 50 percent or more of the seats, they win the election with a majority government. This means that their vote will almost always win when it comes down to it. If a party gets the most seats but that amount does not equal 50 percent, they win with a minority government. That just means that they cannot automatically pass bills because they will win a vote on them. Bills go up for discussion and there is the potential for other parties to veto them more. Personally, I believe minority governments most definitely look like the better option to have your voice actually heard as your MP gets more of a say in the discussion than if the leading party were to just be able to pass.
Hopefully that explanation of how voting works helps you to understand that there is no such thing as a "wrong" vote because you are not actually even voting for the next PM. You are voting on your representative. Your vote decides who is going to be your ridings voice in parliament. They are who will be fighting for you.
And if you are curious to see the complete list of all political parties in Canada whether they have standing or not, have fun!
